Biography
He earned his Bachelor’s degree (Finance: 1972) and Master's degree (Economics: 1978) from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale) in 1972. From 1972 to 1976 he was an officer in the U.S. Navy. From 1978 to 1982 Dr. Campbell was a Rates and Research Analyst for Madison Gas and Electric Company. While earning his PhD at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (1986), he worked as a research assistant and later as a full-time research associate for the Center for Business and Economic Research where he co-authored studies for clients including the Tennessee Governor’s Office, Tennessee Valley Industrial Corporation, the State of Tennessee, and Opryland U.S.A. Dr. Campbell also helped to maintain and run the Tennessee Econometric Model and authored the Tennessee Employment Security Econometric Forecasting Model.

Dr. Campbell received his PhD in Economics in 1985 with areas of specialization in Regional Economics, Economic Development, and Economic History and came to Mississippi State University as an assistant professor. He teaches Regional Economics, Regional Economic Analysis Methods, Economic History, the History of Economic Thought, Econometrics, Principles of Economics, Economic Forecasting, and Managerial Economics.
During his years at Mississippi State, Dr. Campbell has served as Associate Dean for External Affairs in the College of Business and Industry, Director of the Technology Resource Institute (an EDA University Level Center), and Director of Business Research and Services.
Recent Consulting

Dr. Campbell has conducted applied research for such clients as the Bower Foundation, Children's Defense Fund, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, Mississippi Department of Corrections, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Mississippi Department of Human Services, Mississippi Personnel Board, City of Greenville, TVA, NASA, US Navy, Mississippi Arts Commission, Mississippi Manufacturers Association, the Mississippi Economic Development Agency, Chevron, and Phillips Coal Company. Dr. Campbell built, maintained and ran the Northeast Mississippi Econometric Forecasting model for 11 years.
Dr. Campbell has testified before a number of committees of the Mississippi Legislature, the Public Service Commission of Mississippi, and the U.S. Congress and has been designated as an expert
